If I asked you what helps you sleep better, you’d probably say things like:
- No caffeine after lunch ☕
- A dark bedroom 🌙
- Less screen time before bed 📱
- Maybe one of those sleepy-time teas that taste vaguely like grass.
All solid ideas.
But here’s one you probably weren’t expecting:
Lift some heavy stuff.
Yep. A recent review of research found that strength training was the most effective non-medication strategy for improving sleep quality in young and middle-aged adults.
As someone who spends my days helping people get stronger, I love when science backs up something we’ve been seeing for years.
Because here’s the thing…
You don’t just sleep so you can recover from your workouts.
Sometimes your workouts are exactly what help you sleep better in the first place. In other words, strength training improves sleep—and the research is becoming harder to ignore.

Researchers looked at dozens of studies that tested different ways to improve sleep without medication.
They compared things like:
- Strength training
- Walking and aerobic exercise
- Nutrition changes
- Meditation
- Better sleep hygiene
- Lifestyle changes
- Yoga
- Health education
- Acupressure
The winner?
Strength training.
It consistently came out as the most effective strategy for improving sleep quality in young and middle-aged adults. Nutrition changes and regular physical activity also helped, but resistance training ranked at the top.
Which honestly makes a lot of sense.
Healthy habits tend to work together instead of living in little isolated boxes.
How Strength Training Improves Sleep
Introducing a concept called locomotive syndrome. Now, before your brain starts picturing Thomas the Tank Engine, let me explain.
Researchers in Japan created the term to describe the gradual loss of strength, mobility, balance, and physical function that can happen as we age.
It wasn’t just about getting older.
It was about people losing the ability to do everyday things independently—walking, climbing stairs, carrying groceries, getting up from a chair—and the strain that placed on both families and the healthcare system.
The researchers wanted to know:
“What can people do now to lower that risk later?”
One of the biggest answers?
Improve sleep.
And one of the best ways to improve sleep?
Strength training.
Funny how things come full circle.
Better Sleep Is Just One of the Benefits of Strength Training
Here’s what I find most interesting.
Is strength training helping because it improves sleep?
Or does it help because it makes you stronger?
Honestly…
Probably both.
When you get stronger:
- Everyday activities feel easier.
- Your balance improves.
- Your muscles and bones stay healthier.
- You’re less likely to lose independence as you age.
Then better sleep helps you recover.
Better recovery helps you have better workouts.
Better workouts make you feel more energetic.
Which makes it easier to keep showing up.
It’s basically the world’s healthiest positive feedback loop.
Here’s where things get even more interesting—because all of those benefits don’t just show up in how you feel. They show up in how you move.
Strength training doesn’t just improve sleep and energy in isolation. It directly supports the physical abilities you rely on every single day: walking, balancing, bending, carrying, and reacting quickly when life throws something unexpected at you.
So the question becomes less about “Am I sleeping better?” and more about “Is my body still capable of doing the things I want it to do comfortably?”

Instead of chasing the latest sleep hack you saw on Instagram, I’d encourage you to consider a few things.
🌿 Start strength training if you aren’t already.
You don’t need to lift every day. Two to four sessions per week is plenty for most people.
🌿 Move your body outside the gym.
Walk. Hike. Play with your dog. Garden. Dance around your kitchen while making dinner. It all counts.
🌿 Pay attention to your nutrition.
No, you don’t need a perfect diet. But consistently eating enough protein, fruits, vegetables, and whole foods supports both recovery and sleep.
🌿 Treat healthy habits like teammates—not competitors.
Too many people ask, “Should I focus on sleep, nutrition, or exercise?”
The answer is… yes.
They all make each other better.
One of the biggest myths in fitness is that you have to be “old” before strength training really matters.
I couldn’t disagree more.
Strength training isn’t just about bigger muscles or lifting heavier weights.
It’s about giving Future You the best chance to keep hiking, traveling, carrying groceries, playing with your grandkids, getting off the floor without making weird noises…
(Okay, maybe we’ll all make weird noises. That’s probably unavoidable.)
The point is this:
You don’t build strength because you’re getting old.
You build strength now so aging has a harder time slowing you down.
And if strength training improves your sleep along the way?
I’d call that a pretty great bonus.
